I just finished a 24.185 km cycling that lasted about 1hh:44mm:22ss !

Wainuiomata Reservoir
I know it has been a while since I've been out on a ride, but that was all sorted this morning by fixing the problem with my bike. It was a usual route I take but at a more relaxed pace.

the problem, solved
The problem was I couldn't down shift the front derailleur, unless I got off the bike and tapped it with my foot. There are 3 possible reasons for this
- the return spring is broken
- the cable is broken
- the derailleur has seized due to road grime stopping the chain guard returning freely on its pivot points.
The 1st problem means a replacement derailleur, so I checked the other 2 causes which I can fix myself at home in the garage. The cable was fine so it was time to remove the front derailleur from the bike, and while I'm at it, clean the drive chain.
It was a seized derailleur
After soaking the derailleur in a plastic container filled with hot soapy water for an hour, I gave it a liberal spray of CRC Multi-Purpose Lubricant. Then over the next 30mins I freed up the guard rail pivot points and eventually the return spring was able to operate correctly.

everything back together
While on the ride the chain was a bit noisy, so I'll add some more chain oil before I head out on the next ride.
